So what happens in Hypnotherapy - Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a safe and natural aid to therapy. Hypnosis allows you to focus on what is happening to you and how you can find solutions to make positive changes in your life; relaxation is often used, but not always.

Your mind is made up of conscious and subconscious - the conscious mind is very logical and deals with everyday stuff - the subconscious is where we store all our habits and everything we've learned through experience.

Hypnosis simply allows us access to the subconscious part of the mind so we can change some of the things stored there and so make changes in our life. We often use hypnosis ourselves automatically - you've probably daydreamed - we usually daydream when we have a lot to do and don't really want to make a start or even know what to do first - by daydreaming, we move the conscious mind aside for a while and access our subconscious.

How many times have you said "if I don't think about it, I'll remember it" - that's also you trying to switch off your conscious mind and use your subconscious. And suddenly, when you're doing something completely unrelated, the answer pops into your head.

In hypnotherapy we want to do the same thing - we only use hypnosis to allow you easy access to your subconscious mind. The subconscious creates a programme for everything we have ever learned - a kind of step by step guide - and when a particular situation arises in our life, the subconscious checks the programme to see how we need to behave. It doesn't ask the conscious mind "is it alright if I run this programme", it just does it!

This is why we react automatically to some events and even to some people and what they say - our subconscious matches the event with some previous experience and pulls out the appropriate behaviour - so we find ourselves half-way through responding before we even realise we're doing it!

So you may find yourself saying things like "I don't want to get angry, but something just comes over me when they talk to me in that way" - that's your subconscious matching the words that they said with something in your past and pulling up the appropriate behaviour for it - getting angry. Using hypnotherapy we aim to change the response that the subconscious mind automatically gives to something more positive and useful for you.
