FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and focused attention.

Can anyone be hypnotised? Anybody can be hypnotised (except where there is a severe mental disablement), as long as they allow themselves to be. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will.

Are any drugs or tablets used in Hypnosis - Hypnotherapy? None whatsoever.

Will I be aware of what’s happening? Yes. In fact your senses are heightened.

Will I be asleep? No, you are simply relaxed. Your eyes may be closed to help your relaxation.

Is hypnosis - hypnotherapy safe? Completely. Hypnosis is a proven therapeutic aid, is completely natural, non-invasive and carries none of the side effects of drugs.

How many sessions will I need? Simpler problems, like smoking, exam nerves, etc usually require a single session. The more deep-rooted problems require Analytical Therapy which usually takes between 6-8 weekly sessions (maximum of 12).

Can I be influenced to do anything against my will or nature while under hypnosis? No. In fact you would immediately be ‘shocked’ out of the hypnotic relaxed state if any such action was suggested to you.

Can ‘normal’ people be hypno-analysed? Not only can be, but arguably should be. Analysis gives you an amazing insight into yourself, which no other therapy can equal in such a short time.

What about medical problems? As with all therapies, if there are existing medical problems, it is essential that you consult your GP first.

How long do sessions last? Sessions usually last for approx 50 minutes but can last longer.

How do I know I will be safe? You have many safeguards, I am a member of GHR which has a very strict code of conduct and ethics that I have to abid by as a hypnotherapist .

Will my visit be confidential? All your personal details and therapy will be kept strictly confidential between you and myself. I take confidentiality very seriously

Dispelling a few myths about hypnosis - hypnotherapy

Control first and foremost you cannot be controlled by anyone using hypnosis. This is a common miconception brought about by stage hypnosis. It appears that the stage hypnotist has complete control over the volunteer but that's not the case at all - people involved in stage shows want to act out the suggestions they are given and they can refuse to do so if they wish.

My therapy doesn't deal in stage show tricks but is a professional practice where I use hypnosis and therapy to create positive and effective change in your life. At any point in the therapy session you can open your eyes and bring yourself out of hypnosis if you wish to - you are in control at all times. Getting Stuck You can't get stuck in hypnosis!

There is no magic word to put you into hypnosis or bring you out of it that only the hypnotist knows. Hypnosis is a safe and natural state of relaxation - have you ever heard of anyone getting stuck in relaxation? In the very worst case if you went into hypnosis and the hypnotist left the room, you would probably notice that it was very quiet and nothing seemed to be happening and you would open your eyes and bring yourself out of hypnosis.

My Mind is too Strong to be Hypnotised! Great! If you have a really strong mind then all the better - you'll be able to put yourself in hypnosis so easily. I say "put yourself in hypnosis", because it's you who decides whether to go into a hypnotic state or not - I simply help you find that state in the first place. Hypnosis is a safe and natural form of relaxation - once you're in hypnosis, I can start to use the "therapy bit" to help you. In fact, hypnosis is something that your body and mind learns to do and the more you do it, the better you'll be at it.
